Autobiographical Mixtape

1. I Won't Complain - Rev. Paul Jones

This song helped me deal with my Pop Pop's death. The song is basically talking about how we shouldn't focus on everything that's wrong in our lives because there's so much that's right. Something my mom always told me to do was to count my blessings. At that time my outlook on life was very negative since my friend had just got killed that summer. I did a liturgical dance to this song the Sunday before the funeral and surprisingly it was sung at his funeral. I always listen to this whenever I feel as though I'm complaining too much.

2. Encourage Yourself - Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City singers

During my 8th grade year I was very insecure about my height. My mom listened to this song a lot since she was unemployed it was hard for her to not have something to do all the time. She was used to being a busy body. She also thought me and my dad felt different about her since she wasn't working. This song helped me and my mom stay encouraged. We helped each other through our trials. I always told her she could get any job she wanted to if she tried. Everyday she would tell me that my height makes me beautiful and that it's a blessing.

3. How Long Will They Mourn Me - Tupac Shakur

This song reminds me of my friend Issaac who was murdered this summer. In the song Nate Dogg says, " I wish it could've been another. How long will they mourn my brother." This is the question I asked myself while everyone was mourning. How long will this pain stay in my heart from loosing a friend. We all wish it could've been someone else he didn't deserve that.  During the song they are just speaking about how much they love their friend and reminiscing.

4. Sing About Me - Kendrick Lamar

This song is just a favorite. Although it speaks about how we should appreciate and remember people while they're with us. He also is talking about a young girl and how she's struggled in life. The system messed her up but she made it through. This could be a message to any young girl but the song honestly just makes me grateful for the life that I have. I know it's not perfect but there's always someone doing worse than you.

5. Only God Can Judge Me - Tupac Shakur

A lot of people worry about what other people think about them. At the end of the day regardless of what I do I know only God Almighty can judge me. I use to worry myself so much that I gave myself anxiety problems. When I finally realized you can't please anyone and they find flaws in everything you do, you get sick of it. I am who I am and people are always going to talk. Tupac helped me realize this.

  1. Autobiographical Mix-tape:
    1) The entries in which I find the most interesting are: 1) Only God can Judge Me, because it is true how people think different on them on an everyday basis, but we shouldn't let anyone judge us for what we have or who we are (shows the most out of you). I think it's great you broke out of your anxiety attacks because you've overcome yourself as a person and showing resilience. 2) Encourage Yourself, based on this post, you are someone who not only cares about people but also wants them to exceed at all costs! I think it's great you can encourage your mother as she was going through a tough stretch and telling her, "You can get any job"! Really shows great encouragement from your part. 3) I Won't Complain, is a great post because you talk about how we all complain about the things we don't have rather than being grateful for the things we do have. This shows you are not only a selfish person but you have care for others as well. 4) How Long will They Mourn Me is good because you talk about losing your friend and although I am deeply sorry for you loss, you have been able to overcome it by thinking about what he did and how he affected you! You will get over it, but it will take time, you have people to always talk to! 5) Sing About Me- shows that there are people who are doing worst than you and we just need to be thankful. Shows your side of caring!

    2) Two entries I believe that are the most interesting are: (Only God can Judge Me and Encourage Yourself) -Only God can Judge Me was interesting because like I mentioned before is it is true how people think different on them on an everyday basis, but we shouldn't let anyone judge us for what we have or who we are (shows the most out of you). I think it's great you broke out of your anxiety attacks because you've overcome yourself as a person and showing resilience. What would make this a strong topic is Character, explaining what character is why people judge. Recall the moments you went through, when people would judge you. -Encourage Yourself was interesting because it shows your motivation and resilient sides. You can write a paper about going through tough times and encouraging yourself and others to do anything you want.

    3) For the two entries I chose, there are things I want to hear in an extended essay are: Only God can Judge Me, I want to hear experiences when others would judge you and how you overcame those. I want to hear if you want your anxiety attacks, what made you have and those and how did you overcome them. For Encourage Yourself, I would like to see how you would help your mom. How did you encourage her? What are some ways you motivate yourself?

    4) For the entries I chose, there is nothing unclear or confusing because while reading them, I found what her message is and how it connects to her personality. I also found she has great passion for everything she writes!

    5) Only God can Judge Me does relate to the video because it talks about how only one person can judge you and that is God. No one else should have the right to judge. In Encourage Yourself, the song does relate to motivate others to work hard and when the going gets rough to never give up.

    6) 6) This is for the song, “Only God can Judge Me”. Thesis_ In society, people often think that others have the right to judge them on their skin color, their personality, their occupation, or any other aspect of life. While in reality, people don’t have the right to be judge on an everyday basis because each and everyone one of us is different and have had many different experiences.

    • I Won’t Complain: Right off the bat this sparks something in my mind. I think this could be the basis of a great essay. The emotion and meaning to you is palpable and I can tell how important it is.
    • How long will they mourn me: Another song that is really touching. For the readers who have lost someone close to them, it is extremely relatable. The emotion in this paragraph as well is very prevalent. You could potentially write a great paper about this personal experience.
    • Sing About Me: This song is also very relatable. Everyone has their struggles and can understand where you are coming from with this in some shape or form.
    • Encourage Yourself: This is a really good quality to have. Encouragement is always appreciated from others, and its very helpful, but being able to encourage oneself is a hard thing to come by.
    • Only God Can Judge Me: This song is a classic. So many people struggle with outside input. The though of not being accepted is daunting, especially for those people who are in high school. This song has helped a lot of people get through hard times, reminding them that they don’t need to worry about the judgment of other people because it is irrelevant.
    2. I think that I won’t complain is a great basis for an essay. You could really build off the ideas set in this song. Although people will agree with most of what you say, I’m sure you could argue something important, just as easily.

How long will they mourn me: Although it is a really sad song, it would be a great paper topic because it is such a difficult thing to get over. Almost everybody loses someone early on in life and it teaches them how valuable life is, and how important it is to cherish loved ones, and yourself.

    3. I would love to hear more about how these songs relate to you, and how your stories affected you as a person. Be more specific to how you felt when these things happened. Make the readers feel in the moment like you did so well in your short paragraphs introducing your songs.

    4. Nothing is unclear in my opinion. I think you were concise and straight to the point about how they relate to you and what they mean in your life.

    5. Yes, these songs are great examples to what the autobiographical entry requires. You will have an easy time writing about them because there is so much to say already about how they relate to your life because they are both such interesting and engaging songs.

    6. Although people have struggles in life, songs like these can help them through and create a safe haven for people to go away to with music.
